I have always loved taking pictures. before I got my own digital camera, I used my Dad’s Olympia and then his Canon. They were alright, but I wanted my own.
I got an Nikon Coolpix L18, then upgraded to the L20 after it was lost. I fell in love with Nikon and I wanted something more.
Only about two weeks ago, I decided to go all the way and purchase a used Nikon D60. I absolutely love it. I have been playing around with it since then, and I am working on getting used to all of the settings.
I just want some critique and constructive criticism on them. I don’t want to hear “they are amazing” or “they suck”- tell me why! don’t be afraid to criticise what you don’t like. honesty is awesome.
All of these were taken with my D60 besides one- the one labeled “I Think I Like This Snow.” It was taken with my L20.
The ones with the snow were taken on my first day with the camera, the cloud and water pictures were taken just yesterday. (as a sort of timeline, lol). They aren’t in order of date taken.

no editing besides “auto correction” on the camera or on picnik were used.
Enjoy, tell me what you think.
BTW I’m in high school.

Thanks julie! ![]()
Candid Chris- Yes, some of them are quite boring- I am deleting ones daily to make room for the nicer ones. Thank you for your compliments, much appreciated. ![]()
papaw- Thanks for the tip. I will keep that in mind.
Launi- Will definitely work on that. that is one of my biggest things I look for- a story. And I am working on capturing it myself. ![]()
Cowgirl- THANK YOU for the honesty.
Meghan- Nope, no problem at all. I use the kit lens that came with the camera, the 18-55mm ones.
Well I think the vote against the shower head was unanimous. hehe. that’s okay, It will get deleted once this question ends. Still figuring out my style.
Thanks for all of the help so far!
citylife- can you tell me why instead of just saying they are boring?
i tihnk they are amazing because most of them look really unique and beautiful(i really like the 2-5 pics)
i like the one’s of your dog alot too but sorry i am not good at explaining things so i’m not going to try lol
btw your dog is very cute i love corgis
You’ve got talent. Some of your subject matter is fascinating, but some is just so-so. Keep up what you’re doing. You could have a good future in photography!
Well, some of them ‘suck’ and some are actually pretty good.
A good part of your indoor and outdoor dog shoots are simple snaps and are taking up space that could better be used for your more creative ones to come.
‘Stripes In The Water’ and ‘Stream’ are a very good representation of the way to head yet they could be better in a closer crop.
Nice!
Keep shooting.
Have fun in the ‘process’!
I truly believe you are a fantastic photographer. I honestly cannot wait to see your skills grow over time! Hopefully you will find the constructive criticism and advice that you are looking for.
all the best :3
My daughter uses a Nikon D60. She also took a photography class in school.
So, I have something to compare. Most of Ashley’s pictures tell a ‘story’. Without captions you can see the story unfolding.
Your pictures are sharp, clear, good depth. Up the ‘originality’. Tell a story with a picture. Make it stay in a person’s mind.
I love them!
I love your dog! I like the ones with the sky and trees and I like the water ones but i don’t like the shower head one. Your dog is a great poser
Awesome! And your dog is absolutely precious. I LOVE “stream” and “stripes in the water”… what lens do you use, if you don’t mind me asking?
Some of them are quite good – I like the “Stream” and some of the water droplet pictures. However, I think many of them are trite, cliche. I cannot tell you how many photos I’ve seen of animals, animal eyes and scenery. Just try to be more original and creative. Take pictures of things that would generally be considered ugly or unnoticable, and turn them into something beautiful. That is what photography’s all about, you know.
Continue taking pictures, and keep improving!
I know we were discussing this on chat but I kinda figured it was a waste to not contribute to your question
My 3 favorites & why
“stripes in the water” – I like the way you caught the swirling colors in the stream of water, I love how it pops against the straight lines of the stripes in the background. I like how you caught the depth by focusing in on the ‘point’ (the water, the colors in the water) & the background is unfocused. It helps your eye really *see* what you were seeing. Something I would change? The faucet looks a bit off. Im not sure if thats the flash shining off of it but it just doesn’t fit in as nicely. The rest of it is wonderfully focused.
“no tresspassing” – I most like the concept of the photo itself rather than the overall execution. I like the contrast between the white snow & the dark gnarled looking plants surrounding the signs. I would change the angle it was taken from, rather than taking it from looking down Id of tried it straight on & up closer. Maybe from below? Im not sure, I just feel like something more could of been done with it. I like that the tree is going diagonal as opposed to straight up & down. It kinda of adds more to the contrast I was talking about. I know it seems odd I am showing so much criticism to a “favorite” but I just really liked the idea you had.
“tread lightly” – I love the softness of the paws! It has a feeling of movement to it as well, which I like. It gives the feeling the cat was “kneading” his paws against the chair. Again, I like the focus on the subject & the out of focus background. The detail in the fur is pretty good, though could be improved.
3 un-favorites & why
“peaceful lumber” – While I do like the texture in the picture, I find it bland. Im not crazy about how the lumber is dead center in the middle of the picture.
“squeaky clean” – The water droplets are the one reason why this photo is interesting. Other than that, Im not sure what the idea was supposed to be. I wish there had been more focus on the water & less on the shower head.
“you are what you eat” – I dont like the yellow-ish lighting. Id have liked to of seen more focus & detail on the food. The 2nd piece in that gets cut off at the top distracts my eye a bit from the rest of the picture. The focus looks more into the right hand corner than the left, where the subject of the photo actually is.
I hope that was somewhat helpful. Honorable mentions go to the photos of Jack & Cloe. I think you capture their personalities wonderfully.
Keep going!
I like the water droplets and the ice pictures (not so much when you can see the showerhead, and know where the water is coming from….when you dont know, it makes you look close to figure out what you are looking at.)
I also like the one where your Corgi is lying on the floor, because of the way the colors work together. Not so much where she is against black and white.
they’re not bad, but not great either.. some of them are just boring.. sorry..
Awesome photos! I would really love to see the No Trespassing one in black and white.
